About us

From Sailing Research to Maritime Innovation

Our engineering expertise builds on sailing and sports aerodynamics research at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), including CFD, wind tunnel testing, sail aerodynamics, onboard sensing, and performance prediction for the professional sailing. We are now translating this expertise into practical, automated wind-assisted propulsion technologies for commercial shipping.

Our company

Engineering Wind for Modern Shipping.

Wind has powered ships for centuries. Our challenge is to make it a practical, reliable and efficient auxiliary propulsion resource for modern commercial shipping.

Originating from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Windward Dynamics brings together expertise in aerodynamics, mechanical engineering, sensing and automation to develop modular, retractable and automated wind-assisted propulsion systems.

Our initial focus is coastal and regional commercial vessels, with solutions designed for both retrofitting existing ships and integration into newbuilds. We are currently advancing our technology through research, engineering development and prototype testing.

Our mission

Make wind assistance practical.

Develop wind-assisted propulsion technologies that aim to help commercial vessels reduce fuel use, operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

Our vision

More efficient shipping.

A maritime sector where well-integrated wind propulsion can contribute to vessel energy efficiency alongside other engineering and operational improvements.

Engineering capabilities

Connected disciplines.
A common objective.

Aerodynamics

CFD, aerodynamic design and performance prediction.

Mechanical engineering

Wing-sail architecture, actuation concepts and vessel integration.

Automation

Sensing, control and operational performance optimisation.

Our team

People behind the engineering.

Expertise spanning sailing aerodynamics, scientific research and marine product engineering.
